Berlin 2017 by Dorcas Oyewande

To begin the Berlin tour we met up at the school in the earlier hours of the day (7:00) and sluggishly began our journey to Dublin airport. When we arrived and checked in, we were given an hour for lunch and shopping before embarking on the two-hour flight to Berlin. We got to the hotel at around 18:40, were given our rooms and ate our dinner at the hotel at 19:45. Afterward, we took a trip to the holocaust memorial stones which were very impactful and visited and took several pictures at the Brandenburg Gates.

Friday morning we went into the city and got a tour of many significant historical and political sites (including Berlin Wall which was covered with amazing art) and then were given time for food. After food, we visited a chocolate factory where you could buy + customize your own chocolate bars. After that, we went to the Charlie checkpoint museum (which was where the soviet and American sectors of Berlin met) and got an amazing tour and was told many amazing stories about how and why the wall was built, consequences of the wall being built and the many people who tried to escape. Following the museum, we went bowling in an American inspired bowling alley and then had dinner at an Italian restaurant (although many of us did not particularly enjoy the food, we still had fun).

Day Three:
This morning we visited Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum, which was built was built in the summer of 1936 by prisoners of Emsland concentration camp. Between 1936 and 1945 more than 200,000 people were imprisoned. Tens of thousands of people died of starvation, disease, forced labor and mistreatment, or were victims of the systematic extermination operations of the SS. It was very intriguing yet depressing to see and enter all the buildings where so much suffering was caused. Next, we had our lunch and visited the Gruselkabinett/Berlin Story Bunker, which is an authentic World War II 5 storey air raid shelter. There we experienced and learned several interesting facts about the life of the Germans who were forced to take refuge there. Afterward, we were given some time to shop at the Alexa shopping centre and then were take to the top of the Berlin TV Tower to view the city from high.

Day Four:
After breakfast, we went to visit the Deutsches Historisches Museum, which is the official national history museum of the Federal Republic of Germany and enjoyed a very enlightening experience there. Next, we spent some time at the nearby Flea Market before visiting the Zoo. The majority of us did not enjoy this visit as plenty of the animals e.g giraffes, flamingos, etc. had to be kept indoors because of the cold (many of the other animals seemed rather depressed too). After returning to the hotel for dinner, we set out to Lasergame Schöneweide where we engaged in several games of Laser tag as well as other minor arcade games, and I believe I speak for all of us when I say that this was one of the highlights of the tour.

Day Five:
On the final morning, we visited the Reichstag, which is where the German government is situated. There, we climbed to the top of the glass Somewhere we were able to see great views of the city, and walk around the exhibition of black-and-white photos portraying the history of the Reichstag since its birth in 1894 up to the reunification of Germany in 1990. Following this, we were given 4 hours to shop, before heading to the airport and boarding our flight home.

This TY Tour to Berlin was an invaluable unforgettable and educational experience that I am very pleased to have been on
